Most hail damage on a Novi roof is invisible from the driveway. The homes built through the 1990s and
2000s across 48374 and 48377 carry laminated architectural shingles, and hail doesn't
strip those the way it strips an older 3-tab. It bruises the mat underneath while the granule surface
stays put — so the roof looks fine, and the damage is real.
Meanwhile the 1970s stock around 48375 is largely 3-tab, where the same storm leaves an obvious dark
strike. Two shingle types, one street, two completely different signatures. An inspection
that only knows one of them writes half a claim.

Cross sections are illustrative, not to scale. The practical point stands: on laminated shingles a
hail bruise is felt before it's seen, which is why a ground-level look or a drone pass can miss a roof
full of it. Confirmation takes a chalked square and hands on the slope.

The Inspection
What a Novi storm inspection actually covers
Four findings get established before anything goes to a carrier.
Shingle type first, damage second
We identify the profile and manufacturer before assessing anything, because it determines what damage even looks like. A laminated shingle with an intact granule surface can still have a bruised mat that gives under thumb pressure. A 3-tab from the same storm shows a hard circular strike with the asphalt exposed. Reading one as the other is how claims get underwritten short.
Test squares per slope
A chalked ten-by-ten square on each slope, impacts counted inside it, each one photographed. Carriers generally look for a threshold count within a square before conceding a slope, so a roof documented as a whole rather than slope by slope tends to get partially denied. Wind and hail also load slopes unevenly — the north and west faces frequently carry damage the street-facing slope doesn't.
Collateral evidence off the roof
Soft metals record hail when shingles are ambiguous. Gutter aprons, downspouts, furnace and dryer vent hoods, window wrap, AC condenser fins, and mailboxes all take dents that date and size the event. On a disputed laminated roof this collateral is frequently what moves the file, because it establishes hail of a given size struck the property regardless of what the shingle looks like.
Storm date and wind history
Damage has to attach to an event. We check storm records for your ZIP to identify candidate dates, because a claim filed against the wrong date or no date invites a denial on the grounds the damage is wear. Hail corridors are narrow — one Novi subdivision can be hit while another two miles away sees nothing — so the address matters more than the city.
The Claim
How the process runs, start to finish
You decide whether to file. We make sure the file is complete if you do.
Day 1
Free inspectionWe're on the roof, not looking from the ground. Test squares chalked and counted per slope, collateral damage photographed, shingle profile and manufacturer recorded. You get a written report whether or not there's a claim in it.
Day 1–2
Honest answerIf there isn't enough damage to support a claim, we tell you that and we don't file one. A denied claim can sit on your loss history without getting you a roof. If the damage is real, we show you the evidence before anything goes to the carrier.
Day 2–3
You fileThe policyholder files — not the contractor. We supply the documentation package: photographs, test square counts by slope, storm date, and shingle identification. Your carrier assigns an adjuster and schedules an inspection.
Week 1–3
Adjuster meetingWe meet them at the property and walk the roof together. On complex Novi rooflines the damaged slopes often aren't the ones visible from the driveway, and being present is how those get seen. The adjuster makes the coverage decision — we make sure it's made on the full scope.
After approval
Scope reviewWe read the carrier's estimate line by line against what the job actually requires — ice and water barrier where code mandates it, ridge and starter, drip edge, and ventilation. Items missing from an initial scope are supplemented with documentation rather than argument.
Install
ReplacementOwens Corning systems, permits pulled through the City of Novi, magnetic sweep, and full cleanup. Manufacturer warranty plus our workmanship warranty. You pay your deductible — that's the law in Michigan, and any contractor offering to absorb it is telling you what they'll do with your roof.
Check your declarations page before you file
Some Michigan policies now carry a cosmetic damage exclusion or a separate, higher
wind and hail deductible — often a percentage of dwelling coverage rather than a flat
amount. Both change what's realistically recoverable, and neither is obvious unless you look. We'd rather
you know that before filing than after. Pull your declarations page and check the deductible line and any
endorsements; if you want a second set of eyes on it, bring it to the inspection.
Damage Types
What storms do to Novi roofs
Oakland County convective season, roughly April through September.
Hail
Bruised mat under intact granules on laminated shingles; hard circular strikes with granule loss on 3-tab. Both shorten service life and both are claimable where no cosmetic exclusion applies. Collateral dents on soft metals date and size the event.
Wind
Creased shingles that lie flat again after lifting, broken seal strips, and lost tabs along ridges and rakes. A creased shingle has failed even though it looks seated — which is why wind claims get missed more often than hail claims.
Water intrusion
Once the surface is compromised, the next rain finds it. Wet decking, saturated insulation, and ceiling staining escalate fast, and secondary interior damage is a separate part of the claim that routinely goes unclaimed.
Everything else on the envelope
Siding, gutters, downspouts, window wraps, fascia, garage doors, and AC condenser fins take the same storm. Roof-only claims leave money unrecovered — we document the full exterior while we're there.
Local Context
Storm damage in Novi, specifically
Novi's housing splits cleanly by era, and that split is the whole inspection story here. The
48375 area is largely 1970s and 1980s construction — 3-tab and early laminated
shingles on simpler rooflines. Out west toward Beck Road, Wixom Road, and Meadowbrook,
the 48374 and 48377 subdivisions run 1990s through 2000s: larger homes, steeper pitches, more valleys
and dormers, and laminated shingles throughout.
The complex rooflines matter as much as the shingle type. A home with six or seven slopes has slopes an
adjuster won't see from the driveway and won't necessarily walk without prompting — and hail loads
slopes unevenly depending on the storm's direction of travel. Documenting each slope separately is
the difference between a full approval and a one-slope repair authorization.
Being straight with you about geography: our office is in Flat Rock, roughly 35 miles
south. We're not the closest roofer to Novi and we won't pretend to be. What we bring is claim
documentation experience — test squares, scope review, and adjuster meetings — which is what actually
determines whether a Novi hail claim gets written to full scope.
Don't wait on it
Michigan property policies generally require any suit on a claim to be brought within
two years of the date of loss, and most carriers treat that as the practical outside
limit. The bigger risk is earlier than that: the longer hail damage sits, the easier it becomes for a
carrier to attribute the deterioration to age rather than the storm. Documentation close to the event
is what keeps that argument off the table.

An honest answer if there's no claim here
Storm came through Novi. Roof looks fine.
On a laminated roof that's exactly what it should look like — and it tells you nothing. Bruised mat under an intact granule surface is felt, not seen, and it's the most commonly missed finding on Novi's post-1995 housing stock. Free inspection, test squares per slope, written report whether or not there's a claim in it.
Tell us the address and roughly when the storm came through. We'll check the storm record for your ZIP
before we arrive, so the inspection starts with a date to work against.

07Emergency tarping arranged same day if there's an active leak
From the ground, usually you don't — and that's the problem. On laminated shingles, which cover most Novi homes built after the mid-1990s, hail typically leaves a soft bruise in the mat rather than an obvious hole or bare spot. The granules stay put and the roof looks fine from the driveway while the mat underneath has already been compromised. On older 3-tab roofs in the 48375 area the signature is different — a dark circular strike with granules knocked clear. Both need someone on the roof with a chalk test square to confirm.
Does Novi actually get enough hail to worry about?
Oakland County sits in the path of the same spring and summer convective systems that move across southern Michigan, and a single severe storm can hail a two-mile-wide corridor while leaving neighborhoods a mile away untouched. That's why blanket answers about a city don't help. What matters is whether a hail-bearing cell tracked over your specific address, which we check against storm date records for your ZIP before the inspection.
What is the deadline for filing a hail claim in Michigan?
Michigan property policies generally require that any lawsuit on a claim be brought within two years of the date of loss, and most carriers apply that as the practical outside limit. Waiting is still a bad idea for a different reason: the longer the damage sits, the easier it is for a carrier to argue the deterioration came from age rather than the storm. Documenting close to the event is what protects the claim.
My insurer says the damage is cosmetic. Is that the end of it?
Not necessarily, but check your declarations page first — some Michigan policies now carry a cosmetic damage exclusion or a separate, higher wind and hail deductible, and those change what is realistically recoverable. Where no such exclusion applies, a cosmetic determination on laminated shingles is worth challenging, because mat bruising is functional damage even when the surface looks intact. We document with test squares and photographs so the file supports a re-inspection request rather than an argument.
Will you meet my adjuster at the property?
Yes. We schedule our inspection findings around the adjuster's appointment and walk the roof with them, which matters most on complex Novi rooflines where the damaged slopes aren't the ones visible from the driveway. We bring the test square documentation and the storm date record. The adjuster makes the coverage decision — our job is making sure they see the full scope before they make it.
Do you replace the whole roof or only the damaged slope?
It depends on what the inspection finds and what your policy covers. Where damage is genuinely isolated to one slope and the shingle is still available in a matching color and profile, a slope replacement can be the right answer. On most Novi homes it isn't, because discontinued laminated profiles won't match and a patched slope is visible from the street. Michigan carriers will often consider matching arguments where a reasonable match can't be sourced. We document the profile and manufacturer either way so the question gets decided on evidence.
Which is why the most commonly missed hail damage in Novi is on roofs that look perfect from the street. Free inspection, chalked test squares on every slope, a written report with indexed photographs — and an honest answer if there's nothing there to claim.
